Xiu Xiu - La Foret

To hear Xiu Xiu is to be shaken, disturbed, and shown something original. Jamie Stewart sings haunted and tortured, though always with a sense of humor somewhere below the poisoned blood. "La Foret" is his most harrowing and beautiful to date, waltzing between acoustic parts so intimate you can hear his shoe scooting on the studio floor as he inches closer to the mic, and pounding dark-wave thunderstorms where electronics go Mogwai loud and Jamie screams over the hissing, spitting deluge. It's the type of record that leaves you seasick. Give your heart to the darkness; the rewards are immense.-amazon

Antony and The Johnsons - "Another World" MP3

"On Another World, it's the title track, which finds him similarly stranded in transition-- "I need another world/ This one's nearly gone"-- while preemptively missing the plants, animals, and people of the world he's straining to escape. In other words, it's metamorphosis he both craves and fears, and both songs are perfectly poised between those two emotions." It's been said by Pitchforkmedia. I believe that they found they soul on this record. It is one of the darkest songs since the band released so far. I feel like I drive to a different world whenever I listen to the songs of them.

The album sits between the Electronic and Prog-Rock/Art Rock genres sound and features some of both Eno's and Cale's most mainstream work. The single "Been There, Done That" remains the only Eno single to ever reach an American chart. The cover picture is by Brian Eno.

Kent - Du & Jag Döden (2005)

005 album from the Swedish indie band. Following up from the melancholic, beautiful Vapen Och Ammunition in 2002, Du and Jag Doden is a darker and more intense work, full of foreboding and typical swedish existential angst. The album debuted in pole position in Sweden.

Boy George - Sold

The album was a big success in Europe, and a modest success in the UK. Things were worse in the USA because George was not able to tour and promote the record there due to drugs-related restrictions, so the record charted only in the lower regions of the U.S. Top 200, even though he was a multi-platinum artist with Culture Club in previous years. The album was instead a huge hit in Italy, where it became the artist's highest-charting and bestselling work ever - not even his band Culture Club, though extremely popular in that country, ever achieved such an outcome there.

Husker Du - Land Speed Record (1981)

On "Land Speed Record", the Minnesota trio Husker Du debuted with a chaotic live recording that presented the band in all its unbridled early fury. One song ends, there is a burst of applause, then drummer Grant Hart counts off and the band once again hurtles forward in a maelstrom of shouted vocals, manic drums, and guitars like sheared metal. Call it hardcore, call it postpunk: it is pure, angry adrenaline. The 17 songs clock in at a brisk 26-and-a-half minutes, and titles like "Let's Go Die," "Tired of Doing Things" and "Don't Have a Life" convey the harsh, unforgiving spirit of the music.

Tar - Jackson (1991)

"Mohr begins to develop a vocal personality on Jackson, almost in spite of the bleak subject matter. "I don't understand how the hands of progress could be so cold," he wails on "Trauma." A refined sense of dynamics and tempo is also evident: "Walking the King" starts at a trot and than abruptly dissolves into a crawl. "On a Transfer" glides and gallops on a bed of overdriven guitars; "Dark Mark" builds relentlessly to a double-time finale."-trouserpress

Royksopp - Senior (2010)

Senior is a forthcoming instrumental album from Norwegian duo Röyksopp, set for release on 13 September 2010. The album has been described as an introspective, withdrawn, atmospheric counterpart to energetic Junior. Röyksopp described the album as having an "autumn mood" to it, while Junior had a "spring feel". In an interview with KCRW, Svein Berge likened Senior to "the senile sibling of Junior who lives in the attic." The Alcoholic has been described by the band as a "nostalgic idea based on this hobo who hitchhikes on trains and travels from place to place.

Jenny Wilson to Release New Single for “Like A Fading Rainbow”

Swedish sensation Jenny Wilson is bringing her brand of idiosyncratic pop stateside for the first time ever with her U.S. release Hardships! The album is coming out on her own label Gold Medal Recordings on August 24th, but she has teamed up with IAMSOUND Records for a special single release of the track
“Like A Fading Rainbow.”

On this single Jenny builds modern day spirituals off unique instrumentation including harps, marimbas, synths, and her own multi-tracked vocals on a song that FADER regards as “monumental and completely exemplary of her grandiosity of vision.” The b-side of the single features an incredible gospel version of the track “Hardships,” which we’re thrilled to give away to you today, thanks to IAMSOUND!

Hardships! may be Jenny’s first solo foray in to the U.S. scene, yet those with a keen ear may recognize her voice from a guest spot on The Knife’s break-out album Deep Cuts. The Knife also released her 2005 debut solo album Love and Youth on their Swedish imprint, Rabid Records. The following year she teamed up with fellow Swedish pop sensation, Robyn, on The Rakamonie EP which includes the two doing a dueling-keys live rendition of Saul Williams “List of Demands.”

Al Green - Green Is Blues (1970)

"GREEN IS BLUES is Al Green's debut and was the opening shot of a career that included million-selling records, a run of hits and the unofficial passing of the soul mantle from Otis Redding to Green. Although almost half of BLUES consists of covers, all are tattooed by Al Green's unique singing style. Smokey Robinson's "My Girl" and The Beatles' "Get Back" both benefit from Green's impassioned phrasing and producer Willie Mitchell's solid horn arrangements. The novice vocalist even manages to inject a degree of desperation into the Box Tops' "The Letter" not found in the original.

Green Gospel's influence found its way onto this record in the shape of a testimonial reading of Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused" and the fascinating introspection of "Gotta Find A New World." The two songs Green had a hand in composing, "Tomorrow's Dream" (co-written with Mitchell) and "Get Back Baby" point the way towards later songwriting successes such as "Tired Of Being Alone." The former is a tight pop number with a percolating bassline whereas the latter is funkier, a la James Brown."-cduniverse

The Triffids - Holy Water 12"

Holy Water is a single released by The Triffids from their album Calenture. It was produced by Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen, Foo Fighters) and written by David McComb. The B-Side "Good Morning, Good Morning" is the band's cover of the Beatles' "Good Morning Good Morning" from the tribute album Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father. "Red Pony" is taken from the 1983 release, Treeless Plain and "Raining Pleasure" is from 1984 Raining Pleasure EP.

Pete Townshend - Empty Glass

"Who mastermind Pete Townshend's strongest solo record was born in a hailstorm of despair, uncertainty, and tribulation. With the once viscerally powerful Who in limbo, the guitarist nearly sunk himself into brandy-drenched oblivion. He emerged with one of his most gripping solo pieces and--perhaps unsurprisingly--the most Who-like album of all his solo work.

Pete plunges into his familiar themes of aging, sexuality, and spiritual decay with fervor, desperation, and commitment. And while EMPTY GLASS does not approach the roaring physicality of the Who at its best, the emotional punch of "Jools and Jim" and "I Am an Animal" is sure to rattle the cage of even the most ardent hard rock devotee. Also of note are Townshend's vocals. Through the entire album, whether on the radio-ready paean to Meher Baba "Let My Love Open the Door," the bracing "Rough Boys," or the sublime "A Little Is Enough," his vocals are hanging on the edge of a cliff, presumably dangling over a certain death."-cduniverse

La Roux - La Roux

With commercially successful singles "Quicksand" and "In For The Kill" (latterly remixed by dubstep luminary Skream), red-headed, pale-skinned Brixton girl Elly Jackson and her "invisible" co-producer Ben Langmaid irrevocably established their love of 80s pop. This debut album continues the duo’s foray into euphoric retro-dance, nodding non-ironically to the likes of The Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17 and The Human League while remaining impressively contemporary. Opening with a string of sassy tunes--the buzzing "Tigerlily", the synth-heavy "Quicksand" and the slick and fiery "Bulletproof"--it’s apparent that La Roux have colour, class and confidence in spades. The album tapers off a little during the second half--failed experiments like "Cover My Eyes" which features the London Community Gospel Choir don't help--but it still boasts way more in the shape of dynamic killers than sappy fillers. First class.

Guided by Voices – Fast Japanese Spin Cycle

Although this Guided by Voices EP only clocks in at ten-and-a-half minutes, one would be hard pressed to argue against its quality. Among Fast Japanese Spin Cycle's eight tracks are a guitar-heavy version of "Marchers in Orange" that is far superior to the Vampire on Titus version, and "Kisses to the Crying Cooks," an acoustic variation of Propeller's opener, "Over the Neptune." Elsewhere, "Indian Fables" is a sublime little tune that makes the most of its one minute running time, and on "Volcano Divers," Robert Pollard crafts a memorable tune around a single guitar line and an echoing drum. The standout track, though, is the concert favorite, "My Impression Now," which somehow has eluded placement on a full-length album. Possessing all the necessary elements of classic Guided by Voices, this track itself is worth the price of admission.

dEUS - Vantage Point

“Vantage Point” finds dEUS at their most adventurous and self-assured, containing moments of brooding grandeur, via propulsive rhythms, icy synths, deadly riffs and punk-funk grooves. dEUS remain as eclectic as ever, though this new release also finds them at their most emotive and melody-driven, particularly on tracks such as “The Vanishing of Maria Schneider”, where Guy Garvey’s aching harmonies beautifully complement those of dEUS frontman Tom Barman.

Having secured their status as art-rock legends during the 90s … lionised by the likes of Radiohead and REM… it is clear that the best was yet to come, as dEUS stake out bold new frontiers for themselves on what is surely one of the finest albums of 2008 …

Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive? (1984)

"Los Lobos's ability to wade through disparate musical styles isn't the stuff of Elvis and the Beatles, but Los Lobos did it on their debut album. And, unlike much of the material Los Lobos cut their teeth on as a Los Angeles Top 40 cover band, there is nothing lowest-common-denominator about the band's original music. "Don't Worry Baby" is a blues rocker gritty enough for John Lee Hooker; rockabilly meets country, courtesy of David Hidalgo's lap steel, on "Our Last Night"; Cesar Rosas pays homage to the band's Mexican roots on the mariachi-style "Corrido #1"; and "Will the Wolf Survive?" is an infectious jangle rocker that became an early MTV hit. Seamless. File under American Music."

Basshunter - Saturday

The Guardian described the single as "entirely aggregational Euroguff". Robert Copsey of Digital Spy gave the song three out of five stars and wrote: "The production has a hint of RedOne-ness to it, and the chorus features a suspiciously Natalie Horler-esque vocal, but this change of tack still feels fundamentally Basshunter." The BBC's Fraser McAlpine also gave it three stars, commenting that "this represents a development in the Basshunter sound. Where once he seemed to be making dance tracks to sing to, now he seems to be writing with a full song in mind".

Frank Black & The Catholics - self titled (1998)

"Frank Black and the Catholics was the eponymous debut album from Frank Black and the Catholics. The backing group on this album performed on Black's previous album, The Cult of Ray, but the group name was first adopted on this release. The album was recorded live to two-track tape over the course of two days in 1997, but a protracted dispute with Black's label American Recordings, reportedly over the "raw" sound of the recordings, delayed its release for 18 months. The album was released in June 1998 in the MP3 format on GoodNoise.com (precursor to eMusic) and was the first album by a major artist to be commercially released on the Internet. The album was then released in the fall of 1998 by SpinART records in the US. During the interim, Lyle Workman left the group and was replaced by Rich Gilbert, and Black prepared the follow-up, "Pistolero". The track listing is notable for having been sequenced in alphabetical order." review by wikipedia

Jonathan Richman - Her Mystery Not Of High Heels... (2001)

"After a three-year gap, one of his longest, Richman returned with this exceptional album. As with it's two predecessors, it was recorded for Neil Young's Vapor Records label. This time out he's added some reeds and woodwinds into the arrangements, played by Ralph Carney(known for his work with Tom Waits). This bit of flourish adds a nice counterpoint to Richman's vocals. The title track is a classic, as is "Couples Must Fight," another of his succinctly insightful inquiries into romantic relationships.

There's also a new arrangement of his old tune "Give Paris One More Chance," and the set is rounded out with four numbers sung in Spanish, a language he loves to use (and which he also devoted an entire album to, JONATHAN, TE VAS A EMOCIONAR!). While the production adds some punch and even pop texture, the heart of this music remains Jonathan and his guitar, along with his longtime drummer, Tommy Larkins.

The unique ability to move listeners and audiences, through deeply affecting lyrics and enchanting and often hilarious performances--on stage and on record--have made Richman that rare artist who can transcend both musical styles and generations. And now, with the success of 'There's Something About Mary,' the rock 'n' roll played by Richman is more accessible to the mainstream rock audience than ever before. 'Her Mystery Not Of High Heels And Eye Shadows' on Vapor Records, was co-produced by Niko Bolas (Neil Young/Melissa Etheridge) and is packaged in a Digipak."

Ultravox - Ha! Ha! Ha! (1977)

"Before Midge Ure came along, assumed vocal duties, and propelled Ultravox to stardom, the band was a more understated affair. This album is from the pre-Ure era, and features original vocalist John Foxx on vocals.

HA!-HA!-HA! is a bruising album, a tsunami of a set that epitomized the fire and fury of its age. Icy to its core, the disc was produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brilliantly captured both the band's urgency and the brittleness of their sound. Like the implosion of gases that ignited the Big Bang, HA!-HA!-HA! hangs in the millisecond before the ensuing explosion, trembling with ferocious tension and fierce anticipation of the coming storm. Much of the set seems frozen in this moment in time and space, lyrically reflected in "Hiroshima Mon Amour," "Man Who Dies Every Day," and "Frozen Ones." Unlike the celebration of destruction that defined their debut set, Ultravox now stood staring aghast into the abyss, with the manic exuberance of "Rockwrock" emerging not as the exhilarating dance through the death of civilization that many listeners assumed, but the band's panicked response to its collapse. And as fear took hold in the Western world, the band battered themselves against its crumbling walls, ravaged by the artificiality of the society rising amongst its ruins. Even decades on, the sheer ferocity of this set continues to impress."-cduniverse

Badfinger - Wish You Were Here (1974)

"The majestic brilliance of this late-career Badfinger album will forever be clouded by the tragic circumstances surrounding its release. Contractually obligated to Warner Brothers to release six albums in three years, the band was in danger of exhausting their creative resources, but between the spirited admonishments of producer Chris Thomas (whose touch is especially felt on the horn- and string-embroidered tracks), Pete Ham's masterly songwriting, and the band's easy musical rapport and lush vocal harmonies, they banged out a classic. The album barely got a chance to see the light of day before it was recalled in 1975 due to a label/management lawsuit. The band was dropped from Warner Brothers, lost a good chunk of money, and were chastened by the experience. In Ham's case, he was utterly demoralized, and ended up committing suicide shortly after. His creative spark lives on in gems like "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch" and the crackling power-pop classic "Just a Chance."

Bela Lugosi's Dead: Bauhaus

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a gothic rock song written by the band Bauhaus. The song was the band's first single, released in August 1979, and is often considered to be the first gothic rock record released. It did not enter the UK pop charts at that time. The b-side features the song "Boys" and some versions also include an early demo recording of what would be their next single, "Dark Entries". It was released on CD in 1988 and was compiled on the 1998 album, Crackle - The Best of Bauhaus. The original sleeve art was taken from a still of the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Octopus is the third album from British band The Bees, released on March 26, 2007. This Mortal Coil - It'll End In Tears (1984)

It'll End in Tears was an album released in 1984 by 4AD using the name This Mortal Coil as an umbrella title for a loose grouping of guest musicians and vocalists brought together by label boss Ivo Watts-Russell. When released in late 1984, the album reached #38 on the UK Albums Chart. It features many of the artists on the 4AD roster at the time of issue, including Dead Can Dance, as well as key post-punk figure Howard Devoto, who sang "Holocaust", one of two covers of songs from the Third/Sister Lovers album by Big Star to appear on the album. The other Alex Chilton-penned track, the album opener "Kangaroo", was released as a single to promote the album. Two key songs were performed by Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, including "Song to the Siren" by Tim Buckley; which reached #66 on the UK Charts when released as This Mortal Coil's debut single a year before the album. Their version of Buckley's haunting original showed continued popularity in alternative record shops as it spent almost 2 years on the UK Indie Chart. Fraser also performed on "Another Day" by Roy Harper, a track which has also been covered by Peter Gabriel as a duet with Kate Bush. 4AD would go on to release two further albums under the This Mortal Coil name: Filigree & Shadow (1986) and Blood (1991).

Keane - Hopes And Fears (2004)

Keane's debut album, 'Hopes And Fears', follows their Fierce Panda single, 'Everybody's Changing'. The East-Sussex trioplay piano led melodic indie rock evoking elements of both OMD and Coldplay. This release combines gentle synths with dramatic piano leads to create an indie pop crossover.

The Very Best of The Stone Roses

The Very Best of The Stone Roses is a compilation album released by Silvertone Records in 2002. It features most of their singles plus album tracks including "Breaking into Heaven" and "This is the One", all of which were remastered for this album. It charted at #19 in the UK and spent nine weeks in the Top 75. Silvertone has been derided for supposedly cashing in on their famous signing. However, The Very Best of is a fairly comprehensive compilation in that it gathers all the Stone Roses' best known tracks in the versions that are generally regarded as best. The tracklisting was decided upon by band members. The previous compilation The Complete Stone Roses had been criticised for not including material from the group's second album, whilst including inferior edits and alternative versions of many songs. Not only does the compilation contain six songs from their 1989 debut but the album is structured to open and close with the same songs in their album versions.

Mountain Man - Made The Harbor

If Mountain Man were to pack any more nature into the half-hour of music on their rather beautiful debut album, they'd need a cannery. Buffalo, herons, moths, dogs and honeybees are just a fraction of the dramatis personae. The setting is, in part, Vermont, where the three members of the band – all female, contrary to the name – met at college. Appalachian folk informs the sparse instrumentation (usually a lone, slow-plucked acoustic guitar), the complex harmonies and the lyrics, which also invoke black hills and Mississippi swells. The sound is austere but there are riches here, yielded over time.

Stars: "Fixed" from new album The Five Ghosts

The Five Ghosts is the fifth studio album by Stars, which will be released worldwide on June 22, 2010, via Vagrant. I can say the new single "Fixed" is very sugary indie rock song.
